This is an old primitive crock that I bought about 25 years ago and I have no idea what's going on with this crock. I can't find any references to compare with. I don't know if one of the vintage pottery companies did this or if it was somebody else's brainstorm. I fell in love with it and my husband fell in hate with it. So, I have decided to part with it. There is an array of old china pieces and in the 2nd photo you will actually see a little china doll face! There is all kinds of patterns and pieces in this mosaic, including some carnival glass. I can't imagine breaking all of this china to make this! Maybe someone out there has some history on this piece, or knows if this was something folks did to dress up their old crockery. I took plenty of pictures so you can see all sides of it. Do me a favor if you know a little something about this piece and message me, I have all kinds of theories! But, it has always been a conversation piece at my house both positive and negative (i.e. my husband). The condition is old! The glaze on the rim has worn off in places. That's all I can say about this piece, that's why I took lots of pictures! The crock is unmarked so I don't know the maker of the crock. The crock is 10 1/2 inches tall, 8 inches across the bottom, 27 inches around the crock and I'd say it will hold close to 2 gallons Thanks for looking.UPDATE: I have since learned that this is called a memory crock or spirit jar and even ugly jar. The Victorians borrowed the idea from ancient African culture and made it their own. They put together pieces of their real lives, things that were special, memorable or sentimental and put them on these old crocks. It became very popular in the U.S. in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. Each memory crock or jar tells something about the creators life, things they held near and dear (like pieces of their wedding china or their children's favorite dish and so on). I found this fascinating! So this jar is someone's story, how cool is that!?
